What a year for Red Bear Angels! In 2016, we grew to a network of 400+ hotelies, educators, corporate executives, technologists, doctors, data scientists, real estate professionals, financiers and more advising and investing in early-stage companies led by Cornelians.

And congrats to all of our members for furthering Cornell innovation! Red Bear Angels made 15 new investments since the beginning of Q4 2015, bringing our portfolio to-date to 19 investments in Cornell entrepreneurs.

Lyft is a peer-to-peer transportation platform that connects passengers who need rides with drivers willing to provide rides using their own personal vehicles.With 250K rides a month in each of its 17 markets, Lyft has grown its daily open rate by 18% in the past 5 months (vs. Uber’s 4% decrease). Lyft most recently raised $1B with a $500M investment from General Motors in January 2016 for its Series F. Red Bear Angels was able to access Lyft through an SPV created by AutoTech Ventures.
GrokStyle is the Cornell-licensed visual search technology recently developed by a PhD and Professor duo out of Cornell’s Computer Science department. The company is already being deployed to one of the largest retailers in the US, the name of which is available to current investors. Red Bear Angels took the majority of GrokStyle’s largely over-subscribed first round of financing with participation from Canaan Partners.
Twiage, an award-winning (American Medical Assoc, American Heart Assoc) mobile healthcare technology, delivering a prehospital communication and ambulance triage solution that fixes the antiquated radio communication and accelerates life-saving emergency care. With 7 paying clients to-date, Twiage is live at 13 hospitals, up from only 1 in 2015. Red Bear Angels participated in Twiage’s seed round in 2016.
Repairogen is a proprietary technology built out of Weil Cornell that introduces a new method of DNA-based skin repair to reduce risk of skin cancer and improve the health & appearance of skin. Repairogen has actively engaged cosmetic partners to which it will license its tech and whose names are available to those RBA members who invested in the company. Red Bear Angels invested in Repairogen’s Seed round alongside Joanne Wilson, 3kVC/Highline VC and a handful of other angel investors, as well as the Partnership Fund for NYC.

Eversound is a new type of wireless headphone technology to help older adults hear again. Specifically designed for senior living communities to address communication and hearing challenges with their residents, Eversound is already deployed at seven of the Top 20 Largest Senior Living Communities, including Brightview Senior Living and Integral Senior Living. Red Bear Angels made a bet on Eversound even earlier on, but several additional members joined in on the company’s Series A in 2016.
Urban Umbrella is the first company to design a safe & aesthetically pleasing scaffolding sidewalk bridge for cities. Mayor Bloomberg approved one architect’s design in 2010, and that exemption is now the only scaffolding design alternative approved in every city across the US & Canada. After years of testing in central Toronto, the company is now being commercialized in NYC by a veteran venture capitalist & Cornelian business duo. Look out for the safe, secure, white, transparent, soon to be WiFi-enabled scaffolding design arched over storefronts across the U.S. in 2017.

Datalogue uses artificial intelligence to automate data preparation for businesses in retail, pharma, logistics, healthcare and more. Based on proprietary algorithms born out of Cornell Tech research, Datalogue combines deep learning based approaches from Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing to create seamless experiences when working with data. Red Bear Angels invested in Datalogue’s seed round, alongside two of New York’s top VC firms (Names available upon request).

Berri Pro is the first USDA approved organic fruit-based beverage. In Q3 ’16, Berri Pro outsold Vitamin Water to become the #1 seller in the Whole Foods Souther California Market. With key advisors like the former CMO & COO of Snapple Beverage Company, CMO of Ben & Jerry’s, current CEO of YumEarth, and Founder of Mrs. Gooch’s,  Berri Pro is also stocked in the practice facilities of the Golden State Warriors. RBA joined the Series A round in 2016.

Grainful offers pre-packaged meals made entirely from steel-cut oats. Within 2016 alone, Grainful grew from being in 200 to 1600+ stores nationwide. Available at Wegman’s, Whole Foods, Safeway and many more, Grainful moves off shelves faster than the category average – and at an increasing rate. Red Bear Angels invested in Grainful alongside angel investors with former executive and board roles with the grocery industry.

Kalibri Labs is the benchmarking platform for hotels in the digital marketplace, evaluating and predicting hotel revenue performance at the industry, market and hotel levels. Kalibri was co-founded by one of “Cornell University’s 90 Influential Hotelies,” Cindy Estis Green and  fellow Cornelian Bob Bennett, both of whom were inducted into the Hospitality Technology Hall of Fame for their previous ventures.

CoVenture is the early-stage investment firm providing capital and software development for equity in companies demonstrating clear domain expertise. Showing significant portfolio traction already, CoVenture allows early-stage founders focus on initial product-market growth, leveraging their domain expertise without having to sink time and equity a non-CTO developer. Red Bear Angels invested in CV IV, having previously invested in CV II and CV III.
