Happy New Year from the Red Bear Angels team!

In a great year for connecting Cornell entrepreneurs, we grew our portfolio to 7 Cornellian-led companies with three term sheets signed in Q4 alone. We saw a large volume companies in 2015 (60 in Q4 alone) and expect the number of investment opportunities we see to continue to accelerate given the growing pipeline of Cornelian entrepreneurs.

Our three new investments were made by ten members who are mostly new to our group and ready to provide relevant, strategic industry expertise to their founders. And what’s more, the Red Bear Angel Group continues to grow, now with 240 members of entrepreneurial champions.

We would like to officially welcome Academic Merit, Stayful, and TruMid to the Red Bear Angels network:

  • Academic Merit is the award-winning developer of digital assessment, instruction and learning tools for qualitative subjects to students grades 6-12 and their teachers alike. Led by EdTech serial entrepreneur & Cornell alum Steve Shapiro, Academic Merit helps classrooms understand and integrate standards such as the Common Core.
  • Stayful is the affiliate network and booking platform for independent and boutique hotels. Led by former Hotels.com President Cheryl Rosner and developed by Cornell engineer (B.S. & MPS) Chantelle Farmer. We were welcomed into this round by fellow Cornell alum John Balen, who led the round through Canaan Partners.
  • TruMid is the electronic bond trading platform that leverages dark matching technology to introduce an unprecedented level of transparency to investment grade corporate bond trading. Cornell alum Ronnie Mateo launched TruMid with 20 years of credit market experience and a recognizable roster of his peers from Citadel, Goldman, Barclay’s and more. Red Bear Angels’ members joined the round led by Peter Thiel and George Soros.

We also strengthened operations by hiring a full time Managing Director. You can learn more in TechCrunch “Red Bear Angels Backs Startups from the Cornell Community”

How you can continue to be involved:

  • Attend our pitch events: Simply dial-in from your desk or on-the-go to virtually meet the entrepreneurs who we invite to present.
  • Advise & Connect: You don’t have to invest to contribute. If you would like to meet with young Cornell entrepreneurs in your field or function of expertise, please let us know and we will make sure to cater ourupdates to your areas of interest.
  • Let us know what interests you: Have an area or industry where you’d like to invest in 2016? We might have a company in our pipeline that fits.

And keep a look out for invites to our cocktail hours and speaker events in the coming weeks.

Looking forward to growing the Red Bear Angels network and continuing to connect Cornell entrepreneurs in 2016!
